10 Things You Don't Owe Anyone Even When You Think You Do

Other people will always want to advise you on how to do things. It’s in their nature! However, no matter how big or small, what you are doing is really none else’s business but your own and for that you never need to explain yourself to anyone. In order to be able to move forward though and chase after your dreams,it’s important to understand that you are the one person responsible for your life and no one else. You can’t be held back by giving too much attention to what other people think or say.

To help you out, here’s a list of the 10 things you don’t owe anyone even when you think you do:

1. An explanation of your life priorities

Wherever you are in life, no one is allowed to tell you what you need to do.

Let’s not confuse this with giving advice though.

Everyone has their own beliefs and views on the world so their opinion might be entirely different to yours. It’s okay to be open to suggestions, but you are not required to give an explanation for what you regard as your priorities in life.

Perhaps you want to travel and see the world before you finally settle down, or you’ve decided you want to become a parent in your 20s.

Either way it’s your choice to make.

2.An apology if it's not genuine

You don’t owe an apology if it feels forced.

No matter how things ended with your partner or friend, you don’t have to apologize if you are not sorry.

First you need to get rid of the anger inside you and resolve the issue in your mind before you go off admitting to something even if it wasn't your fault.

3. A reason to be alone

Everybody wants to spend some quality time alone once in a while, and there’s no shame in admitting that.

This by any means doesn’t make you rude or anti-social.

The same applies if you’ve chosen to just stay alone for a while by not getting involved in a romantic relationship.

If you don’t ever want to get married, for example, it’s your call to make, and other people need to respect that.

4. Your time

You need to understand that you don’t have to do things you don’t want to.

For example, you don’t owe anyone a date just because they’ve asked you out.

You have the right to say no and should refuse if you don’t feel like going without feeling guilty about it or worry about the consequences.

5. An explanation of how you live your life

No one has the right to judge how you are living your life, and you certainly don't need to explain yourself.

Whether you are living in an RUV or you are still staying with your parents and you are past your 20s, it doesn’t matter because you have your own reasons for doing that.

6. Agreeing with someone else’s personal beliefs

If you feel strongly opposed to someone’s beliefs then you don’t have to agree with them.

When you find yourself in the middle of a disagreement, it’s important to stand your ground and defend your opinion without getting aggressive.

Just because you want to get on well with someone doesn’t mean that you have to comply with whatever they say or believe in.

7. An explanation for your physical appearance

So you’ve decided to dye your hair purple and paint your nails black.

You’ve grown your beard, got dreadlocks and pierced your nose.

That’s ok unless you are under 18 years-old, or you’ve got a big interview coming up.

If that’s not the case, you don't need to explain why you decided to change your appearance.

Let the haters hate; they’ll get over it at some point.

8. An explanation for your sex life

You don’t have to explain your sexual preferences to anybody.

People might judge who you sleep with, but your sexuality is really none of their business.

As long as it involves another consenting adult, and you are okay with it, nothing else matters.

9. An explanation for your career choices

If you are a workaholic or an entrepreneur who has a lot on their plate, you might have to work twelve hours a day instead of eight.

As a result, you may be neglecting your personal and social life, missing out on spending valuable moments with your family and friends.

Whatever you choose, however, is your decision and if it works with your life goals you don't have to explain yourself to anyone.

10. An explanation for your relationship choices

Everyone who cares about you is going to have their say about your romantic relationship(s).

They might say that you and your partner are not a good fit, and you should find someone else.

Even though their advice is welcome, it shouldn’t determine how you feel about your partner and you definitely don’t have to explain why you choose to leave or stay in that relationship.

Essentially there is only one possible conclusion to this.

There is no reason to do something unless it makes you happy.

The secret to living a full and happy life is to free yourself from the obligation to explain how you live your life.

If there’s anything you don’t want to do, follow your instincts and don't do it.

Once you realize you don’t owe anyone an explanation, you will start to be truly happy.
