To Be Successful, You Don't Need A Degree.
You've been taught your
entire life by your parents, teachers, and coaches that you won't be successful
unless you have a university degree, that you won't amount to anything unless
you get high marks and keep your head in the books - kinda become a bookwormer.
This may have been true in the 1990s or even the early 2000s, but with the current state of education, prohibitive tuition costs, and high unemployment rates, our youth are being urged to consider alternatives to traditional tertiary education.
Despite your adolescent brainwashing, there are numerous reasons why you don't need a three-year varsity entrance, the first year of which is typically a haze and a waste of your parents' money, to build a name for yourself.
It must be recognized that there are at least two types of education - the Formal Education that involves a time frame of learning in a formal Institution to acquire a degree in an area the student may not even have an interest in and Informal Education which is mostly self-taught either by passing through the University of Hard Knocks which is also regarded as the University of Life Experiences or a trial and error process.
It was Robert Kiyosaki of the Rich Dad Poor Dad fame that stated that "formal education will make you a living but self education (informal education) will make you a fortune."
Many successful people/entrepreneurs without University or College degrees have done remarkable things, started remarkable businesses, and inspired and mentored even more remarkable people and enterprises, including celebrities Steve Jobs, Oprah Winfrey, Richard Branson, Michael Dell, and Steven Spielberg, as well as South African homegrown Lebo Gunguluza, USN's Albie Geldenhuis, Chicken Licken's George Sombonos, and Netflorist's Ryan Bacher, to name a few.
Because, let's face it, not everyone is cut out for university or college, shouldn't the concept of entrepreneurship be included in junior and senior high school curricula to foster and cultivate an entrepreneurial mindset in our youth so that they can consider starting their own businesses as a career option?
With unemployment at an all-time high, it's worth thinking about, especially because small businesses are the backbone of our economy. The government has made some progress, but not nearly enough to have a substantial influence.
Scooler | The School Entrepreneur Movement's founder, Leon Lategan, says,
"Many people,
especially our youth, have a natural aptitude for entrepreneurship – day-to-day
challenges, socio-economic issues, and difficult times naturally encourage a
certain independence, a gift of the gab, and toughness – they are risk-takers
and, whether they realize it or not, possess the key ingredients for successful
entrepreneurship."
Lategan, a successful entrepreneur, university dropout, and graduate of the school of hard knocks, adds that this perseverance is exactly what has served him and other entrepreneurs throughout the world well, and will serve future young entrepreneurs well as well, combined with a strong work ethic:
"All they need is for these abilities, skills, and creativity to be awakened in them."
Yes, varsity or college
can provide you with an education, but it is far from the sole option. In the
end, you can be your own boss without a university or college degree. You can
learn the basics to help you succeed as an entrepreneur, but you won't learn
what it takes to be successful as your own boss there.
Whether you have a degree or not, you are in charge of your own career and destiny, as many entrepreneurs and self-made people have demonstrated.
Let me conclude with this powerful quote from Albert Einstein
“In the words of Albert Einstein: "Education is what remains after one has forgotten what one has learned in school.”
